SEED-BANKING DRUM KIT DELIVERED
On 5 February 2021, Te Tira Whakamātaki delivered a seed-banking drum kit to Ngā Tirairaka o Ngāti Hine Trust. A seed-banking drum kit is a special and valuable kit that enables whānau to collect, dry and store seeds from local taonga plants using the latest science equipment. The kits are easy to build and straightforward to use, if not a tad expensive. They allow communities to conserve seeds according to their traditional collection tikanga (protocols), and importantly store them at place. This initiative, which has seen nine kits deployed to date, was initially launched when Māori communities identified seed-banking as central to protecting Aotearoa New Zealand from myrtle rust. TTW will continue to seek sponsorship to build and distribute more kits around the motu.
