The Network Behind the Mahi

Our membership exists to support the people who care for te taiao every day. This includes kaitiaki, whānau, hapū, Iwi, marae, researchers, practitioners, educators, responders, community groups, and supporters across Aotearoa and beyond.

This is not just a place to access resources. It is a growing network for people who want to protect te taiao, strengthen Indigenous leadership, share knowledge, build capability, and stay connected to the kaupapa as it moves.

Membership is one way we build that infrastructure. It has a member directory, shared learning spaces, communities of practice, monthly webinars, research and evaluation support, practical templates, environmental literature, and opportunities for people across the motu to find one another.

Some people will join to learn. Some will join to share what they know. Some will join because they are already holding the line in their rohe and want to be connected to others doing the same. All of those pathways matter.

Why Does TTW Have Memberships?

Across Aotearoa, communities are facing overlapping pressures. Biodiversity loss, climate disruption, pest and disease incursions, emergency events, disconnection, and systems that too often recognise Māori leadership after decisions have already been made are all pressing on the same places and people.

At the same time, Māori communities are already doing the work. Marae are responding in crises. Kaitiaki are watching the ngahere, the awa, the moana, and the whenua. Researchers are building new approaches grounded in mātauranga Māori. Whānau are protecting taonga species, restoring ecosystems, collecting seeds, sharing stories, and keeping relationships alive.

TTW membership helps resource the network around that work.

Your membership helps us keep free access available for whānau, hapū, marae, and community kaitiaki. It helps us share resources, stories, webinars, templates, and learning tools. It helps connect kaitiaki, researchers, practitioners, responders, and supporters across the motu. It helps build communities of practice around biosecurity, biodiversity, emergency management, seed banking, research, and evaluation. It also supports Māori-led systems change in environmental protection, resilience, and research.

Mātaki and the Māori Biosecurity Network

Mātaki is TTW’s Māori biosecurity network. It connects kaitiaki who are watching for pest, weed, and disease threats, coordinating Indigenous-led biosecurity responses, and supporting the biodiversity work that becomes possible when the line is held.

Through membership, people can stay connected to resources, kōrero, webinars, opportunities, and relationships that support this wider biosecurity and biodiversity kaupapa.

Hono and the Māori Emergency Management Network

Hono is TTW’s Māori emergency management network. It connects kaitiaki, responders, researchers, marae, hapū, Iwi, and partners working to strengthen Māori leadership in preparedness, response, and recovery.

Membership helps create pathways for people to learn, connect, and participate in the resilience and emergency kaupapa as it grows.

Te Puna Taonga Ora and the work of seed and biobanking

Te Puna Taonga Ora is TTW’s work to safeguard the whakapapa of life through seed conservation and biobanking. It is about protecting taonga species, genetic heritage, and the mātauranga and tikanga that give those collections meaning.

Members can access resources and community of practice spaces connected to seed banking, biological heritage, and long-term care for future generations.

Toa Taitapu and the work of holding the line so the pā remains

Toa Taitapu is TTW’s Māori-led workforce flagship. It brings together the people who protect ecosystems, respond to threats, support communities through crises, and create meaningful pathways for whānau into environmental and emergency work.

Membership is one of the ways people can stay connected to the wider ecosystem around this kaupapa. It supports learning, opportunities, relationships, and shared responsibility.
